The Craft of Bouquet Color Pairing

The most common reason a bouquet looks busy is too many colors. Florists decide the range of color before they choose a single flower: group neighbors on the color wheel, or deliberately collide opposites — there are only two principles.

Analogous colors — the safest, most elegant formula

This is the method of grouping neighbors on the color wheel (within roughly 50 degrees) — adding Pink Peonies and Pink Tulips to Red Roses, say. The color temperature stays even, so it never fails, and the gradation gains depth.

Complements — a contrast that makes both shine

This is the method of colliding colors from opposite sides of the wheel: Purple Lisianthus against yellow Sunflowers, Orange Tulips against blue Delphinium. Each color makes the other more vivid and the bouquet brims with life — but add more kinds and it quickly turns noisy, so the knack is holding to two color axes.

Neutrals — the buffer that joins colors

White flowers and greenery are materials outside the color wheel. Neutrals like Baby's Breath, White Ranunculus, and Eucalyptus break no combination they join, and serve as the buffer between color and color. If pairing colors feels hard, start with two colored kinds plus neutrals.

Keep the vivids to one or two kinds

High-saturation primaries (vivids) give a bouquet its expression, but gathered in numbers they shout over one another. Spend vivids sparingly — one or two kinds, as accents — and support the rest with lower-toned flowers and neutrals. Some occasions, like the Words of Comfort theme, even call for leaving primaries out entirely.

The six palettes

Flowyric's recommended bouquets are sorted into six palettes: Red, Pink, Yellow, Orange, White, and Blue·Purple. Pick the palette you love and start with flowers from that family — deciding the range of color first is the first craft of color pairing.
