Flowyric uses Fern as the name of a greenery material defined by fern foliage, without specifying a single plant species. Although the Korean word gosari can refer to a particular species in some contexts, in Flowyric’s Korean version it is used as the name of a foliage material. Ferns do not flower and reproduce through spores. The North Carolina State University horticultural reference (NC Extension Gardener Plant Toolbox) describes the Christmas fern and Boston fern it covers as having no flowers and forming spores on the undersides of their leaves, but those two species differ both in where they live and in how their leaves get through winter, so it is difficult to group their traits under the single name fern. Flowyric does not treat Fern as season-limited, so it is classed as All seasons and can be added whichever theme you choose.
The story of its meaning
"Steadfast trust" is the flower-meaning label Flowyric gives Fern. The horticultural reference says the name Christmas fern comes from its leaves remaining green around Christmas; picturing that kind of fern holding onto its leaves into winter offers one way to read the label. This is only one possible reading today, however, and not all ferns are evergreen. In an arrangement, Fern is greenery, neutral, and not a bold primary, so it counts directly toward the Words of Comfort requirement of no bold primaries and at least three calm materials.

When to gift it
As a foliage material without flowers, Fern makes a useful foundation when you want a bouquet that does not put flower heads first. The two themes that require two greenery stems are Get Well Soon and Fresh Start, and in either one, two Fern stems meet that requirement. Fresh Start separately counts two white blooms in addition to two greenery stems; although Fern is neutral, its Greenery role means it does not count on the white-bloom side. One basic recommendation contains 2 White Hydrangeas + 2 White Tulips + 1 Baby's Breath + 2 Fern stems: the first five blooms meet the white-bloom requirement, and the two Fern stems meet the greenery requirement. In Winter Gift, Fern counts as neutral; in the basic recommendation of 2 White Lilies + 2 Cotton stems + 1 Baby's Breath + 2 Fern stems, Cotton meets the winter-material requirement and all seven stems are neutral, clearing the proportion requirement.
Pairing tips
Fern has the Greenery role in an arrangement, filling open space between flowers and behind the bouquet. Because its leaves are finely divided and pinnate, placing it beside large, simple flower heads such as Sunflower or Gerbera lets the leaf texture and the flower outlines read distinctly. Because Fern is classed as neutral, themes based on a colored proportion do not count it as colored; under requirements such as Autumn Stroll or Thank You, which require a warm-color proportion, adding more Fern lowers that proportion. Falling short of a requirement is still no reason you cannot add it. Among the other greenery materials, Eucalyptus, Ruscus, Ivy, and Dusty Miller are All seasons, while only Pampas Grass is designated for Autumn. Paired with Eucalyptus, its deep green overlaps with silver-green foliage to build layers of leaf texture.
