Chrysanthemum is a perennial in the daisy family that flowers in autumn. What look like petals are individual florets around the outside; in common forms, yellow tubular florets gather at the center to make one flower head. In some cultivars, however, the florets fill in so densely that the center is barely visible. The chrysanthemums sold by florists today are hybrids involving several Chinese species, and cultivar groups differ clearly in form, including pompon, spider, and incurve types. Because the same order can look different depending on the group, tell the florist in advance when you want a particular shape. Chrysanthemums flower into deep autumn until frost and can provide a late source of nectar for pollinating insects after other flowers have faded. The story of its meaning

There is a long history of finding an upright heart in the chrysanthemum flowering alone through the frost. It has been called one of the Four Gracious Plants with plum, orchid, and bamboo. In China, Tao Yuanming is remembered for his particular love of chrysanthemums, while Zhou Maoshu wrote that “the chrysanthemum is the recluse”. Because it flowers after the spring and summer profusion has passed, people in the past saw in it a person who keeps their integrity while standing apart from the world. The same flower can occupy a different place elsewhere. Material from the French horticultural society SNHF separately mentions chrysanthemum cultivars grown for Toussaint, showing how the flower is linked with that observance in France. Flowyric, meanwhile, removes chrysanthemum arrangements from autumn recommendations when the country is set to France, Germany, or Italy and substitutes other autumn flowers. When to gift it
As an autumn flower that blooms until frost, Chrysanthemum suits a moment of thanks near the end of the year. Consider it for a bouquet thanking a teacher or elder, or for encouraging someone who has worked steadily in one place for a long time. Garden flowering and florist availability do not necessarily coincide, so ask the florist ahead of time when you need a particular color or form. It is also wise to consider the recipient’s cultural setting. As noted above, the flower is associated with Toussaint in France, so the same chrysanthemum may be read differently depending on the occasion. When sending flowers abroad, ask a local florist about the occasions for which chrysanthemums are commonly used there.
Pairing tips
Orange Chrysanthemum has a Main role in Flowyric and anchors an autumn bouquet.
