Plum Blossom is the flower of Prunus mume, a tree in the rose family. North Carolina State University Extension describes this deciduous tree as native to forests and rocky hillsides in south-central China and Laos, with five-petalled flowers and a strong, clove-like fragrance. The wild form has pale-pink flowers, while cultivars range from white through deep rose pink to red. The same source says it flowers on bare branches before the leaves emerge in January and February.
